Gravel roads that seemingly have no end and off the beaten path exploration of the Houston Region

**[Houston Gravel Grinders](http://www.facebook.com/groups/htxgravelgrinders)** is a motley crew of accomplished and deliberately unaccomplished riders that formed in the early 2010s to explore the country and forests surrounding Houston Texas. The founders had one goal: get people on bikes, and explore the greater Houston region to discover its beauty and take advantage of the public lands that exist, such as Texas National Forests.

**Gravel Club** is the events and potential future advocacy arm of the group, with the goal of preserving or converting old forest roads scheduled for closure for gravel and bikepacking use.

The routes on this page have been developed over many years and have in part been used by promoters in their events, but the intention is to create a quality ride experience for all riders, routes that focus on nature, regional history, and landscapes. Some of the routes likely have elements borrowed from others. Wherever you ride, someone has been there before, but hopefully these routes will inspire you to create your own, to use a map as a canvas and plan the escape you want to experience.

This gravel route connecting New Ulm, Fayetteville, and Ellinger has two water crossings of Cummin's Creek and a stop at famous Hruska's for the national pastry of Texas: kolaches. The area is steeped in local German and Czech immigrant history.
